More than three years after finally bringing his first album out, the discreet Alex Gopher is back with his second opus, Wuz, made in collaboration with young and promising French producer Jeremie Mondon, aka Demon, who became known for a handful of EPs and an album, Midnight Funk, released on 20000ST over the last few years, as well as a string of high profile remixes and collaborations . Gopher emerged from the Parisian scene with his mates Air and Etienne De Crecy. Noticed with Tryin’, Party People and the magnificent The Child, which sampled Billie Holiday’s God Bless The Child, Gopher followed on the footsteps of Daft Punk with a brilliant mix of disco beats and soulful melodies, while introducing at the same time a funkier approach.
Wuz opens with Demon’s aptly titled Intimacy, gently introducing the groovy title track, which features a sample of George Duke’s Guardian Of The Light. Wuz is where the Gopher boogie machine really kicks in. Not a stomper as such, despite its funky guitars and beats, it nevertheless sets the mood for the rest of the album with its huge dance floor potential. Follows the Daft Punk-esque Focus and the massive Without You, which promises to take clubs across the world by storm with its heavy beat, recurring vocal snippet and slight 70’s influence. With this track, and the subsequent The Shell and Keep On Dancing, which closes the album, Gopher and Mondon move away from the subdued ambiences of You, My Baby & I to set Wuz on fire and launch a direct attack towards clubs. It is back to laidback electro-funk with Long Island, and more temperate climates with the infectious Use Me and Be As One though, the later introducing more modern elements of club life, and could well be a winner in Ibiza this summer.
If Wuz doesn’t feature any songs of the calibre of Tryin’ or The Child, Gopher and Mondon present however here a brilliant album, which could succeed when Daft Punk and Air seem to have lost some of their wide appeal.

Alex Gopher is a rather timid French man, more interested by what happens behind the scene than by the limelights. Originaly from Versailles, near Paris, home of the Sun King, he went to school with the two guys from Air, and Etienne De Crecy, the guy behind Super Discount. Alex was never really interested in superstardom, and was perfectly happy recording little songs in his bedroom for him and his friends. But these friends managed to persuade him to step into the light and give it a go. And man, the result funks! Right from the very first track, you can't help it. Your legs can't stop shacking, and you don't even want to try to stop them. The highlights of this record are probably the superb The Child, featuring a sample of God Bless The Child by Billie Holiday, and the new single, Party People, that is not so far apart from Prince in very good form.
