Without
Etienne De Crecy, the French electronic scene would without any doubt be
radically different. Although he only released his first solo album a couple
of years ago, he has played a key role in the explosion of the Paris dance
scene, as a producer for a range of artists including Air,
for whom he produced and remixed their first single, and Alex
Gopher. After releasing a handful of EPs and an album, Pansoul,
as one half of Motorbass, De Crecy finally became widely recognised for
leading the Super Discount project. Tempovision Remixes proves
not only that he is one of the cleverest activists of La French Touch,
but also that he knows how to put together a proper remix project like
no one else.
Tempovision Remixes
could almost pass for an alternative version of the original
album, as it follows the exact same order of tracks. Keeping in line
with his remixing activities, De Crecy offers two of his own reconstructions,
on the opener, Relax, and as Mooloodjee for Am I Wrong. If
Relax
retains its laidback groove, only augmented of a more obvious beat in the
second half, De Crecy gives a more upbeat turn to the funky
Am I Wrong.
Gopher
offers once again his support with the Wuz remix of Noname, but
this album also presents some of the most exiting young blood constituting
the second wave of talents to come from France. First in line is young
hip hop producer DJ Medhi, who is causing quite a bit of a stir on the
other side of the Channel thanks to his recent album (The Story Of)
Espion, on which he cleverly mixes electronic and hip hop, and his
role behind the desk for the latest 113 album, one of the rising French
rap posse. His version of Out Of Hand offers an oblique vision on
the original rather than a radical transformation. Medhi injects some raw
funk into De Crecy’s eclectic house. Next to come is young prodigy Demon
with his perfect remix of the beautiful Scratched, undoubtedly the
most exhilarating moment of this album. After a first well received album,
Midnight
Funk, Jeremie Mondon has just released the excellent Wuz
with Alex Gopher. Here, he keeps all the elements
that made the original such a classic, but applies a more deconstructed
beat structure, expending De Crecy’s atmosphere through his own. Other
brilliant moments include Sebastien Leger’s take on 3 Day Week-end
and the beautifully reshaped Hold The Line by Jamie Lewis.
Most of the remixers have
chosen not to radically restructure De Crecy’s already excellent compositions,
but to present variations instead. This doesn’t the least diminish the
work of any of them here and demonstrates their ability to balance the
need to bring their own touch and the respect for Etienne De Crecy’s near
perfect work. This album is an exiting companion to Tempovision.

Etienne
De Crecy, of Super Discount fame, is better known as being one of
the pillars of the “French touch”. Released over two years ago, the compilation
of which he was the initiator has brought to our attention, not only he,
but also Air, Alex Gopher and many others. They all went on to be very
successful in their native France, as well as in the UK and in the rest
of the world with their respective albums. It is now his turn to release
his first solo effort.
Tempovision is, in
many aspects, very different from the Super Discount project. Of
course, the disco genius of Prix Choc or Le Patron Est Devenu
Fou is still at work, on Am I Wrong, 3 Day Weekend or
Hold
The Line, but De Crecy slows the tempo slightly down on Out Of My
Hands or the magnificent Scratched, a song that digs deep into
jazz and soul, and even more on Relax, Tempovision or the
ultra chilled Rhythm & Beat. The man gets his inspiration as
much in the 70’s disco as in mid twentieth century jazz. His extensive
sampling of Millie Jackson is not without reminding the use of Billie Holiday’s
God
Bless The Child by label mate Alex Gopher. However, brilliant vocalists
Belita Woods and Clip Payne also accompany De Crecy on this venture, giving
the album a singular soulful touch. The man excels in building songs that
have enough charisma to feature on an album while still being good floor
fillers.
Tempovision is a
record with temperament, the music is captivating, imaginative and consistent,
the production faultless. De Crecy has waited for the hype to come down
slightly on French dance music, only to revive it, yet again, and this
time in his favour.
