Fifth
solo album from Jimi Tenor, and his funk-jazz-pop-lounge is more disconcerting
than ever. After a pretty difficult-to-apprehend and dark Organism,
Out
Of Nowhere showcases a new side to his talent. Not forgetting his keyboards
and organs, Tenor has, this time, hijacked a complete Polish orchestra,
and has supplied them with some amazing musical constructions. Ranging
from jazz, on Paint The Stars, to Scott Walker-meets-Prince-style
easy funk, on Blood On Borscht or the fabulous Spell, to
avant-gardism, on Out Of Nowhere, Tenor goes deeper into his obsessions
with perfect mess. Sometimes very reminiscent of his Impostor
Orchestra album, which seems to have been no more than a style exercise,
or a training ground for him, like on the opening track, he twists conventions,
ignore rules, and do as he pleases for three quarters of an hour. The man
is free, his mind completely disassociated from the rest of his body, and
evolving in some sort of musical twilight zone. Out of Nowhere has
to be his most enchanting record to date, and proof it needed, that the
man has a talent as big as his world. Finland hasn’t brought out that many
great artists to the world, but Jimi Tenor was definitely worth waiting
for.
