In just a few years, Bugge Wesseltoft’s Jazzland label has become one of the most important independent jazz labels in Europe. Rejecting the traditional American jazz as too conservative, he has, through his own music as well as others’, defined new boundaries, inspired by the non conformist of ECM and the modernity of electronic music. Barely a few weeks after the release of Remixed, Jazzland now brings the first album of new material from Sami singer Mari Boine. Recorded with some of the biggest and best contemporary Nordic musicians, including legendary Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek and Bugge himself, who not only plays on this album but also produces it, Eight Seasons is an emotional journey through arid territories and luxurious soundscapes.
Intense and pure, Boine’s music is truly unique and has won her countless praises all over the world. Singing mainly in her native language, she expresses more than interprets poems from Sami writers. Her gravity defying voice inhabits the music and empowers the arrangements to infinite beauty. Even when she ventures into English, on the stunning Song For The Unborn or Butterfly, the emotion emaning of her singing remains untouched. Based on tribal percussions and acoustic orchestrations, the compositions are embroidered with electronic textures and found sounds to underline the atmospheric nature of Boine’s creations. At times arid and austere, at others luxurious and joyful, Eight Seasons reflects the polar conditions that are integrant part of the singer’s life. The divine opening track, I Come From The Other Side, encompasses the ambience of the whole album. Incantation to a pagan god, the emotional charge is palpable, first through Mari’s voice, then through the melancholic tenor sax of Garbarek. When the two finally evolve side by side, the atmosphere becomes even more intense and reveals the poetic depth of Boine’s music. Each song, in its own particular way, captures similar emotions, in turn transcended by the relationship between the singer and her guitar (Sarahka’s Wine, Hymn, You Never Know), the incandescence of the percussions (In A Blanket Of Warmth) or the organic sonic constructions spiralling around her voice (Song For The Unborn, Let Silver Protect).
Wesseltoft contained production leaves Mari Boine with all the necessary space for her to express her intense personality through her compositions. Eight Seasons is a beautiful labour of love. Love for all things natural, for purity and integrity, and ultimately love for life.

Stretching over four countries, from Finland to Russia, the land of the Sami, or Lapland as it used to be referred to, is situated in some of the most retired parts of Europe. Born in the small Norwegian village of Gamehhisnjarga, in the heart of Samiland, singer and percussionist Mari Boine has become an ambassador for her culture. In 1990, she released her second album, Gula Gula, on Peter Gabriel’s Real World, and received critical acclaim from all over the world. Blending the sound of her ancestors with other ethnic genres and modern technology, Mari Boine has, since her early recordings, transcended the barriers standing between world music, jazz and rock, and has gained much respect from fellow musicians and critics alike. It was only a matter of time before her work got the remix treatment by the likes of Jah Wobble, Biosphere, Those Norwegians or Bill Laswell.
After choosing a track from Boine’s back catalogue, each remixer was asked to reshape it in their own style. Opening the album is the massive Chilluminati Mix of Gula Gula, which has taken the chill out rooms of Ibiza by storm last summer, and ended up being included in the latest Café Del Mar instalment. Here, Illumination retains the sensitive settings of the original, while bringing some intense orchestration to counterbalance Mari’s powerful vocals. This very much representative of the approach adopted by most of the artists on this project. Jah Wobble accentuates the tribal characteristics of Boine’s natural compositions on Cuovgi Liekkas by developing the drumming to stunning effect, while Biosphere’s Geir Jenssen opens his usual iced ambiences to accommodate the incredibly beautiful voice on Álddagasat Ipmilat, building textures based on naturally acoustic sounds. The Nils Petter Molvær & Jan Bang remix of Gulan Du incorporates more of the same elements, using once again percussions to full effect. The same track is given an entirely different twist earlier on, when Those Norwegians turn it into a groovy dance floor killer. Here, Mari Boine’s vocal performance is isolated from its original context and given a whole new dimension. Although the track works well as it is, the Nils Petter Molvær & Jan Bang keeps closer to the original emotion intended by Boine. Mun Da Han Lean Oaivámuš and Vuolgge Mu Mielde Bassivárrái get a most sensitive reworking by Phono and Roger Ludvigsen, Fred Ellingsen and Thomas Sonnenberg respectively. Both reinterpretations favour intense electronic treatments inspired by the rhythmic tradition of Boine’s music, although developed in different ways, to provide a much effective backdrop to her voice. Closing the album is an evolutive ambient mix of Áhccáái by Future Prophecies.
The reworking of these ten songs by the crème of the electronic scene is bringing the attention on one of the most intriguing artists in Scandinavia. Each track has been delicately rethought, and brought to life once again, in truly magnificent style.
