Mirwais
Ahmadzaï is not exactly a new comer. In the eighties, he was the guitarist
in French post punk band Taxi Girl. After the band split, in 1988, he formed
Juliette Et Les Independants with his girlfriend, before reinventing himself
as an electronic musician. Production is his first solo album. And
what an album it is. Reminiscent of Daft Punk on Disco Science or
I
Can’t Wait, or Air on Naïve Song, Mirwais has a lot more
to offer than just a late input on the French touch.
Production sounds
at first like a reject from 1981, and has all the charm of that era, but
it also has a surprisingly modern sound. On the bluesy V.I. for
instance, or on the punk-ish Junkie’s Prayer, Mirwais mixes guitars
and computers to the T.
His talent won him the interest
of Madonna, who subsequently asked him to produce her latest album, Music.
She even features on Paradise (Not For Me), completely unrecognisable,
and barely credited. The track, which also features on her album, is surely
the highlight of Production, but doesn’t overshadow the others.
Every track has its own personality, and Mirwais manages to produce one
of the big surprises of the year. Production is simply infectious,
and you will find yourself listening to it over and over again.
