Washington
DC’s Rob Garza and Eric Hilton first met in 1995, after being introduced
to each other by a mutual friend. They went on to form The Thievery Corporation.
After a string of 12’’ released on Eighteen Street Lounge, they eventually
put their first album out in 1998. Sounds From The Thievery Hi-Fi
displayed a blend of dub, bossa nova, and chill-out that has since become
their trademark. They went on to release two compilation albums. They are
now back with their second proper long-player, The Mirror Conspiracy.
Over the last couple of
years, they have developed their style, improved considerably their approach
to sounds, beats and production, and, mainly, added vocals to their dope
music. Garza and Hilton have collaborated with a series of vocalists, each
adding flavours to their electronic music, from delicious Brazilian atmosphere,
in So Come Voce, to Indian acrobatic melodies in Indra, and
French pop in Le Monde or Shadows Of Ourselves. This gives
the album a unique multi-cultural feel. Jumping from an ambiance to another,
Thievery Corporation create a surprisingly homogeneous, delightful, record.
