WARP
WORKS & 20TH CENTURY MASTERS

On Saturday 8 March, the work of Aphex
Twin, Boards
Of Canada, Squarepusher
and Mira Calix
will be celebrated in style, as London’s Royal Festival
will play host to an evening of avant-guard music. The
London Sinfonietta, conducted by Stefan Asbury, will play
work by the aforementioned artists, together with compositions
by avant-guard composers Stockhausen, Cage, Nancarrow,
Ligeti and Ives. The evening will also include a performance
of an exceprt of Nunu, a work created by Mira
Calix in 2002 and commissioned by Geneva’s Museum
d’Histoire Naturelle. The piece, entirely composed
using sounds of insects, was premiered in Geneva towards
the end of last year. For the London performance, Calix
will be accompanied by the London Sinfonietta, and will
also feature a glass box of insects hooked up to her mixer.

BERLIN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL

Tansmediale.03,
the Berlin international media art festival will take
place between 1-5 February at the House Of World Culture.
Entitled Play Global, the festival will focus
on the rising eastern European electronic music scene,
with contributions from John Oswald, Negativland's Mark
Hosler, Ultra-Red, David Toop, Kit Clayton & Sue Constable,
Scanner,
Tonne, Si-cut.db,
People Like Us, Serhat Koksal aka 2/5BZ, Radian, Mapstation,
the Thomas Mann Project (featuring Thomases Brinkmann,
Franzmann and Fehlmann), Kein Babel, Pan
Sonic and many more. The festival will also feature
a number of conferences around the impact of globalisation,
screening of documentaries and many more activities. For

TWINE ANNOUNCE DETAILS
OF NEW ALBUM

Cleveland's best, Twine,
one of the most active electronic outfits on the American
scene, have announced details of their follow up to last
year’s Recorder
album. The self-titled album will be released on Michigan-based
Ghostly International record label next Autumn. Greg Malcolm,
one half of Twine,
described the album as “lighter than Recorder,
with more emphasis on song structures and the use of traditional
instruments”. Vocals will be more prominent than
on the band’s previous work.
The band who have been keeping away from live performances
for the last few months have played a first gig at the
Music Factory, Colombus, OH on 17 January, and have announced
another date, at the Blind Pig, Ann Arbor, MI on 25 January.

READERS WIFES RELEASE FIRST

Forget Fischerspooner, the Wifes have landed! The trashiest
set of DJs London has seen in over twenty years are releasing
their first single, Bitch At The Brits in February.
Chelsea Kelsea and Kim Phaggs, aka The Readers Wifes,
have been hosting the infamous Duckie night at the Vauxhall
Tavern every Saturday for the last seven years, promoting
everything the uptight London gay scene had rejected in
block, from punk to reggae, classic rock and 80s electro-pop.
Bitch At The Brits sees the fully formed Wifes
joined by keyboard player Jeremy Kimberley and guitarist
Mark Satanic. The single will be released on ever-excellent
Popbitch's new record label. Expect some London dates

GOLDFRAPP ANNOUNCE NEW
ALBUM AND TOUR

Goldfrapp have announced details for the follow up to
their first album Felt Mountain. Black Cherry
will be released on Mute on 28 April, with a single, Train,
released on 14 April. The band have also added a second
London date to their schedule. The original London ULU
show on 6 March sold out rapidly, and the band have added
a date at the Astoria on 18 May. Further UK dates will

THE WIRE ADVENTURES IN
MODERN MUSIC RADIO SHOW

From Thursday 23 January 2003, The Wire will be hosting
a new weekly radio show on London-based radio station
Resonance 104.4 FM. The show, named Adventures In Modern
Music, will be broadcast every Thursday between 9.30-11pm
GMT across central London, and streamed live from www.resonancefm.com,
and will feature a selection of new releases, advance
previews and reissues reflecting the editorial line of
the magazine. |

Continuing on their tradition of alternating between studio
albums and remix packages or compilations, the Pet Shop
Boys will be releasing Disco 3 on 3/02 in the
UK, 4/02 in the US and 5/02 in Japan. The album includes
reworkings of tracks taken from Release, remixes
of B-sides and three previously unreleased tracks, including

BROADCAST COMPLETE RECORDING

have just announced that they have now completed recording
the follow up to 2000’s beautiful The
Noise Made By People. There is no release date
for the album yet, but a late August / early September
release is likely. An EP should precede in April / May. |

HIGHER
INTELLIGENCE AGENCY LIVE DATE AND NEW TRACKS

Bobby Bird will be playing his first Higher
Intelligence Agency live set for years at the Babylon
club in Istanbul on Tuesday 25 January 2003 as part of
the Adventures In British Music series of concerts
in Turkey’s capital. This programme of events, curated
by the British Council, aims at bringing together a variety
of musical genres and promote British artists, established
or unknown, abroad. The HIA
set will feature visuals from Active-Optics. Bobby Bird
is expected to play more dates later on this year.
Bird, who has released two solo albums and collaborated
with the likes of Biosphere,
Pete Namlook and Brian Duffy, also features on the recent
The Fire This Time compilation, released on Hidden
Art, with two unreleased tracks: Lines In The Sand
and an excerpt from Conoid Tones. The album also
contains tracks by Orbital, Aphex
Twin, Bass Communication, Bola, Pan
Sonic and Speedy

Speedy J
has added a few dates to his current worldwide tour. The
Dutch techno legend will be playing in Werningerode, GER
(18/01) , Cannes, FR (25/01), before heading down under
for a string of dates in Australia and New Zealand. Dates
as follow: Auckland, NZ (28/02), Sydney, AU (01/03), Perth,
AU, (02/03), Gold Coast, AU, (08/03) and Melbourne (09/03).
All New Zealand and Australia dates have yet to be confirmed.
