legend John Peel died of a heart attack last night at
the age of 65 while on a holiday in Peru. BBC Radio 1’s
longest serving DJ, with a career spanning over 40 years,
John Peel was made famous all over the world thanks to
his legendary Peel Sessions. Peel is almost solely

MANITOBA
BECOMES CARIBOU
7 October 2003
|
 |
Following
a lawsuit preventing him from using his stage name, Manitoba,
Dan Snaith will now be performing and releasing music
as Caribou. The lawsuit was brought by the lead singer
of American punk band The Dictators who, although he has
never released any music under his own stage name (Handsome
Dick Manitoba), sued Snaith for trademark infringement.
‘My immediate reaction was total disbelief. Most
of the people I’ve talked to about it see this case
as being utterly nonsensical. Unfortunately, US legal
precedent didn’t agree and faced with a court case
that I couldn’t afford to lose, I had no choice
but to change the name’ declared Snaith about the
affair. On his website (www.caribou.com),
he adds: ‘Due to a lawsuit in the US I've been forced
to change my name from 'Manitoba' to 'Caribou'. Full details
are below but suffice it to say I'm left in equal parts
confused, enraged and saddened by this aggressive litigious
behaviour which doesn't seem to me to have benefited anyone’.
His first two albums will be re-released under the new
name by Domino in North America and The Leaf Label for
the rest of the world. Snaith is currently recording the
follow up to last year’s Up
In Flames, which is expected. |
