Although Wide Angle was released nearly a year
ago, and that it was our album of the year in ’99, it
was never actually reviewed here. So, now that Distinct’ive
have decided to re-release it as a limited double album,
we’re putting it right.
Do you remember how you felt the first time you’ve heard
Electribe 101’s Electribal Memories or Massive
Attack’s Blue Lines? Do you remember how these
records didn’t sound like anything else around? How
they sounded so far ahead? Wide Angle is of
the same calibre. It grabs you and doesn’t let go. Never.
And the comparison to Blue Lines doesn’t stop
here. What strikes first with Hybrid’s album, is the
combination of break beats, trance, luscious strings,
similar to the ones heard on Unfinished Sympathy,
and amazing vocal performance by Julee Cruise. Then
it is the homogeneity of the sound throughout. This
record sounds like the combined soundtrack of Dr
Zivago, any James Bond movie and 2001: A Space
Odyssey.
Wide Angle is a massively ambitious debut.
And where most would have either been shy or fallen
into complacency, the Hybrid boys never seam to be able
to do anything wrong.
The addition of a second CD, including tracks recorded
live, hence the crowd noises, and the collaboration
with Chrissie Hynde, is only a bonus to all music lovers.
This album is just indispensable. It’s either you have
it… or you’re out of it!
