Mira Calix used to be the press officer for Warp Records.
Nowadays, she records for them. One On One, her
first album, is a piece of dry minimalist electronica,
flirting with isolationism and Autechre-like
beats. From start to finish, this album never cease to
intrigue and disconcert. Remote voices coming and going,
big fat sounds emerging from nowhere, deep reflection...
Unfortunately, One On One seems to suffer from
a lack of the natural flow characterising the music of
Autechre,
LFO or Plaid
for instance. It sounds a bit like the artist is trying
too hard to impress, and loses focus on her subject slightly.
Nevertheless, One On One remains a very promising
and interesting first album, in line with the most abstract
Warp sound and deserves more than a listen.
