To Rococo Rot is a German band, based in Berlin, and
The Amateur View, their fourth album, was released
almost a year ago. Part of the electronica family, the
band has a surprisingly light approach of the genre.
Closer to Plaid or Plone
than they are to Autechre,
with their melodies and quite chirpy sounds, TRR make
records to entertain. The similarity with Plone
doesn't stop at the Casio-like sound. Tracks such as
Telema or Cars, with their childish melodies
and upbeat tempo, are obviously made by and for people
with Lego feet. But unlike Plone,
To Rococo Rot are slowly drifting towards their teen,
and sometimes, on Green or She loves Animals,
you can hear mother asking when her boys will eventually
grow up. Reassuringly, the answer is invariably "never"
in the end.
Beneath the lightness, there is more complexity than
it seems at first though. Only, the guys make the songs
sound so easy than you can't help but like this album.
To Rococo Rot create with The Amateur View,
the perfect music for perfect people living in a perfect
world. And Björk
is a fan! It says it all really...
