The 2009 Review

Twelve months compiled into just twenty albums. From the thousands of records released each year, it is difficult to get even a handful on the site, and even more difficult to decide which ones were the best of the lot. This is however the twenty albums that have marked 2009 for themilkfactory.

Well, I’ve only got two of these albums, which’s why I come here. Will be investigating the other 18 at my leisure.

Great list. Some things I agree with, some things I need to check out. Thank goodness for Milkfactory!

Great list. The Broadcast mini-album thing is fascinating, and the Peter Broderick record sounds lovely. Definitely need to get a few of these; thanks for the recommendations. I did a kind of a series thing here for my favorite electronic records of 2009. The first three segments are linked at the bottom. Cheers.

So it will involve the wonderful Merryweather Post Pavillion then. Great news.

Colin, thanks for the heads up. It’s been a particularly good year I think, with some pretty stunning records released, slightly more in the first half of the year than in the second it felt, but still one of the better years as far as I’m concerned. Certainly one of the better years since themilkfactory first appeared 10 years ago.

I try to keep a list of releases as I review them, more or less, (here this year’s: http://rateyourmusic.com/list/themilkman/themilkman___2009_in_review) and most titles have been going up and down depending on releases and how they held up during the year. It’s always quite an interesting, if quite demanding, exercise.

I have been toying with the idea of doing a top 20 of the last 10 years, but it’s just too daunting a task. I might do something in the new year…

Looking forward to your list too (I expect it’s on its way, unless I’ve missed it).

    Dominic,

Thanks for the kind words. Your list is very interesting too. I haven’t heard the new 2562 but I liked the first one. Your list reminded me that I meant to review the Lusine album but never found the time. Shame as it is actually a really good one too. These lists are always a bit of a killer I think as it just makes you realise how much you’ve missed or what you’d have like to squeeze into your own. Still, it’s great fun, isn’t it?

  6. Dominicon 14 Dec 2009 at 11:18 pm

Thanks for reading, and yeah, that Lusine is great. I strongly recommend that new 2562, as well. The trouble of putting these end-year lists together is occasionally somewhat of a headache, but scouring them sure is a BLAST (even if it eventually gets a bit expensive). Thanks again.

Well, my top of 2009 is kind of alternative meets indie pop, so it was hard to put all the things together, but it’s following
    10. The XX – The XX
    9. Ben Frost – By The Throat
    8. Marissa Nadler – Little Hells
    7. Fuck Buttons – Tarot Sport
    6. Animal Collective – Merriweather Post Pavilion
    5. Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions – Thorugh The Devil Softly
    4. Nils Frahm – The Bells
    3. Memory Tapes – Seek Magic
    2. Hildur Gu∂nadóttir – Without Sinking
    1. Fever Ray – Fever Ray

somewhere under this top 10 is also:
Peter Broderick – Music For Falling From The Trees
    Clark – Totems Flare
Moderat – Moderat and few things that match the taste of this beautiful web site. Summary of my 2009 thoughts is on my Slovak blog:

Thanks! My list isn’t yet hatched, maybe something to do over the Christmas break. I’ve a rough list and yes I’m thinking of doing a short decade list too, but like you say it’s pretty daunting. Oh and very glad to see snd in your top 20! They were a stunning live experience in Portugal this year. I’d love the chance to hear them again.

Wow. I have to admit… Through all the lists that I feverishly consumed in the past couple of weeks – the is the list that is THE MOST aligned with my tastes. And I guess that I’m not surprised. I’ve been a fan of The Milk Factory for quiet some time now. Even now, as I prepare the next list in my series of Headphone Commute’s Best of 2009, I feel like I’m copying some of the albums presented on here. Thank you for being so consistent and persistent, Mr. Milkman… You are an inspiration. :)

As a selfish gesture, allow me to share my favorite albums, which will be emerging 10 at a time in a course of the next few weeks. I’ve got a lot to share! :)
